Food Safety for Food Security. A model for developing good practices
18:30 11 Dicembre 2014
Food security has been defined as a situation in which all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to enough safe and nutritious food, in order to cover their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life (World Food Summit Declaration, Rome, 1996). The challenge of hunger is complex and multifaceted: physical and economic access to food, as well as food availability, nutritional adequacy of food, food utilization and stability of supply aspects are fundamental to ensure global food and nutrition security. Food safety is also strictly related to food and nutrition security: ensuring food produced and consumed is safe, preventing food safety threats and ensuring a swift response to food safety situations have very positive impacts on food security. Tackling this issue requires an organized, coordinated approach, to improve human, animal and plant health status and enhance compliance to sanitary and phyto-sanitary (SPS) standards, thereby helping developing countries to take advantage of potential export markets. During this event CaffExpo – organized within the framework of the initiatives scheduled for the Semester of the Italian Presidency of the Council of the European Union - the challenges for global food security will be explored, with a focus on the role of food safety in ensuring food and nutrition security, particularly for the world’s poorest and most vulnerable people in developing countries. The role of international cooperation will be discussed together with the actions and the area of intervention of EU Development and Cooperation - EuropeAid.
